Short history

The founder of Calictus Filter Systems is the Dutchman John Gieles. John has a degree in psychology and after having worked 30 years as a manager in a psychiatric hospital, he decided to found his koi business. He was one of the first retailers of imported Japanese Koi in the Netherlands and he has visited Japan in 15 years, more than 30 times. He attended several seminars at the University of Wageningen on fish diseases. He lectured in the Netherlands, Germany and the United States on pond construction, fish farming and filter technology. He worked with universities and research institutions to develop and improve the Calictus filter systems. He founded the famous Dutch Koi Society for which he wrote the rulesHe is a certified judge for the All Japan Koi Show. Based on his experience and a successful career in the fish and pond construction business, he decided to develop the first completely self cleaning pond filter: the Calictus Automatic. The filter has won several innovation awards in the Netherlands. The most recent innovation is the Calictus Automatic Plus. This combination has the very intriguing capacity not only to clean itself but also to remove the collected pond waste from the filter without losing a drop of water.

Goals

During our 30 years of experience in koi keeping our purpose has always been to develop a filter system that

1             Needs hardly any maintenance and is preferably self cleaning

2             Doesn’t spoil water during the cleaning process

3             Filters both biologically and mechanically. Delivers healthy pond water all year                around, no         ntrite no ammonia

4             Does not get polluted

5             Delivers clear pond water all year around. Is reliable and can be delivered with a clear                water    guarantee

A koi pond filter, which could achieve this would provide the best water quality and would differ from all other pond filters.

Self-cleaning

Many garden and koi pond filters on the market wrongly used the predicate self-cleaning and thus made the concept implausible. Self-cleaning as that you have to clean the filter your self, instead of really self-cleaning. You must always press on something, pull on something or turn something. We wanted to deliver a truly self-cleaning pond filter. Not only for koi ponds, but also for ornamental or garden ponds without Koi.

Saving water

Our next goal was to save water while cleaning the filter. That we have succeeded. With the ECO Calictus cleans Calictus Automatic without losing a drop of water. As a bonus, it turned out that the plants thrive in a Calictus-ECO-pond nearly 2 times better than most other filters

Mechanical and biological filtration

The filter should of course have a mechanical and biological filtration. It has to catch finer floating particles and to break down    the toxic substances such as NH3, NO2 biologically

Automatical sludge removal

As the nitrification process works better in a rather clean filter, the filter should be able to remove the collected waste automatically and on a regular basis.
